In the Bulgarian community of Banat, Zabunj is considered the most valuable piece of the feminine costume, with an imperial air: embroidered and ornated with golden sequins, gold and silver thread. It was weared only by the women from wealthy families. The garment involved a lot of painstaking work that ended with embroidering the initials of the one for which it was intended. The artist’s intention is to observe the evolution of this piece in which the complexity of embroideries becomes an architectural net.
The village of Dudeștii-Vechi is the modest home of a small community known as the Palćene or Bulgarians from Banat in Romania. The identity of this group, forged in tradition and religion, is imbued with a great community spirit, and their traditional feminine costume represents a peculiar approach.
